Bullet Current Campus Policies

UW-Madison has successfully implemented numerous programs to help reduce high-risk drinking. Current campus policies:

  • Residence halls have several policies in place, including a no visitor policy for Halloween weekend and Mifflin Street party; no “beer can trophies” decorating rooms; drinking is not allowed in the room unless all residents of that room are over the legal drinking age.
  • Parents are notified when their students are transferred to detox.
  • The Chancellor sends out a “campus expectations” letter to all incoming first-year students at the beginning of the fall semester.
  • The Dean of Students office has mandatory appointments with all students who violate UWS17 (the policy governing nonacademic misconduct), including student-on-student violence and detox transports.
  • We publish and distribute a “Safe House Party” guide free in the student neighborhoods (including giving to the landlords who rent to students) that both explains the laws and when police will come to break up your party as well as how to keep them safe.
  • The Unions are serving alcohol under our “Best Practices Guidelines,” including stiffer scrutiny of IDs, charging higher prices for their alcohol, and better bartender training.
